True Story From an Anonymous Contributor #3
Back in my college days, a roommate of mine went through an experience that opened my eyes to the dangers of pornography. He was a fun-loving guy, active in school activities and in his church congregation. He was outgoing, gregarious, funny, and popular with the ladies. Towards the end of our second semester as roommates, he seemed to be going through some sort of personal trouble. As we discussed our plans for the summer, he admitted that he wouldn’t be coming back to school for a while. I was shocked as he began to explain to me that he had dealt with an addiction to internet pornography since he was in high school. He told me that it had finally led him to act on his fantasies. He had sought out sexual encounters with women he had met on the internet and after multiple sexual encounters with strangers, he had hit rock bottom. He was taking some time off to attend therapy and to deal with his addiction head-on.
I was floored to say the least. I always pictured porn addicts to be creepy, older men who were socially backward and borderline criminal. I am so grateful that my friend shared his story with me because it made me realize how harmful pornography is and how universal a problem it is in our society.
